Japanese Gold leaf and Lacquer Elements from Architecture or a Butsudan. Four Gold leaf squares, about 21/2”x21/2inches, are delicate, show a rich age beautifully with designs of birds flowers and bamboo. Two black lacquer squares show gold leaf designs of flowers and bamboo.There is a rectangular gold piece with subtle designs and two small vertical black lacquer pieces with a fine design of gold lines. The carved wood and gold leaf ‘aura’ might have been mounted behind a sculpture of important Buddhist figure. All of these pieces could be redesigned into a new form or enjoyed as is. Bought in Nara, Japan from a dealer in 1987.
