The image is constructed of hundreds of very small calligraphs sewn with gold threads on dark silk. The image is of the deeply beloved figure of O Jizō sama found all over Japan - especially in small street altars. He is venerated by both Buddhist and shint adherents. He is often called the "St. Christopher of Japan" as he is the patron saint of travelers, children and animals! This piece is old and very, very good. It would have hung in a Buddhist temple or shint shrine. Bought from a dealer in Nara, Japan in 1991. Excellent condition.
